The paint on the sign has barely dried but Sue Cato and Brett Clegg’s communications outfit is about to add another heavy hitter.

Malcolm Turnbull’s former chief of staff Clive Mathieson is joining the Surry Hills-based Cato Clegg, specialists in merger and acquisition advice, as its managing director from Monday.

Mathieson, who also worked as Berejiklian’s deputy chief of staff before joining Turnbull, has a long history with Clegg.

Mathieson rose through the ranks of The Australian, where he eventually became editor including when Clegg worked as deputy chief executive of the paper. (Clegg mostly worked at the Australian Financial Review where he finished up as publisher).

Meanwhile, Cato — who Mathieson has known for just as long — represents big-name corporates like private equity outfits TPG and Carlyle, as well as Wesfarmers and Fairfax Media, publisher of this newspaper.
