Facebook launches local news feature in 10 Australian cities

Today In will be added to Australian Facebook menus from Thursday onwards, and a collection of local news will show up in the News Feed.


While Facebook uses personalised algorithms to deliver News Feed content, the local news and information will be the same for everyone in the same area. The content is chosen by many different algorithms but, in part, posts that have been interacted with and read more are prioritised, and local publishers as opposed to national publishers will be the focus.


“Everyone sees the same content,” he said, noting useful alerts like bushfire information are likely to be pushed higher.


There may be moves in future to include locally-relevant news from broader publishers and to allow people from different areas to look at different areas’ Today In pages.


“The good thing for publishers is they don’t need to do anything to appear in Today In,” he said, noting he has been speaking to local publishers about how to maximise audience engagement and the benefits of the feature.
