“They said the process is basically you have to get strata approval, you have to do a management plan, you have to do floor plans, which then you have to go buy from the council themselves, even if you haven’t changed anything,” Mr Bruce said.
“But then, ultimately, I got to the very end and I said it was a bit harsh due to you guys changing your rules internally within the council that I’ve now been deemed an unapproved development for a disruptive technology.”
Mr Bruce said he might also require building inspection and environmental reports.
City of Belmont chief executive John Christie said landowners or occupiers operating unauthorised Airbnb/short-stay accommodation businesses do face a penalty of $200,000 with possible daily penalties of $25,000.
But only two operators had been fined in recent years.
