Left faction pushes Labor Party to fix culture of secrecy

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten is one of 26 members of the national executive, which is led by the party’s elected president and includes union leaders, federal and state MPs and a representative from Young Labor.


One member, powerbroker and former communications minister Stephen Conroy, has been accused of a conflict of interest over his work for the online gambling industry, raising questions about his influence over federal or state policy.


The debate is not confined to Labor, with former prime minister Tony Abbott campaigning against giving official positions in the Liberal Party to lobbyists such as Michael Photios, a leading figure in the party’s moderate faction.


Liberal Party troubles have included the sudden departure of former honorary federal treasurer Phil Higginson in 2015 in a dispute over financial transparency and the theft of $1.5 million in party funds by former Victorian division director Damien Mantach, who was sentenced to five years in jail.
