Founder of cosmetic group Mecca wins entrepreneur of the year

Since that time she has grown Mecca into an empire of 95 stores in Australia and New Zealand, turning over hundreds of millions of dollars.


It’s a long way from her takings of $1873 on her first day trading in 1997. 


“Jo is just an exceptional entrepreneur on many levels. This recognition is really well founded for her,” said head of the EY judging panel, serial entrepreneur Ryan Trainor.


Mr Trainor said Ms Horgan showed how critical it was to have an inventive spirit to succeed in a traditional, bricks-and-mortar retail environment.


“You’ve got a business in a highly competitive area, you’ve had major global retailers try to enter, you’ve got the emergence of online,” Mr Trainor said.
