After the log became public, Assange dismissed it as “freewheeling banter and quips” but “even the funniest do not represent Wikileaks’ editorial policy”.
In September 2015, when Turnbull replaced Abbott, the chat group fired up as Assange supporters did their homework on the new PM.
They seized on a speech he gave to Sydney University Law School in March 2011, which had featured on Turnbull’s personal blog but was later deleted.
Emmy Butlin, one of Assange’s most staunch supporters in London and a member of the group, found a copy of the speech on a web archive.
She pulled out a quote in which Turnbull criticised Julia Gillard for not defending Assange against prominent American politicians and journalists describing him as a terrorist and in some cases calling for him to be assassinated.
