Marathon legend Robert de Castella has slammed the new direction of the AIS, declaring the once proud sporting hub is dead and lamenting the end of an era at the Canberra campus.

The Federal Government will publish details of a National Sports Plan on Wednesday, which will aim to generate revenue to fund participation, national teams, athletes and stamp out corruption in sport.

It was hoped the plan, which has been developed over the past 18 months, would also give clarity to the overhaul at the institute, which has been a shell of its former self in recent years.

But it’s unclear if a review of major assets, including the AIS Arena and Canberra Stadium, will be unveiled this week as Australian Sports Commission officials consider downsizing the 64 hectare campus.

De Castella, a former AIS director, likened the AIS situation to that of a sinking ship and feared political decisions would haunt the next generation of athletes, coaches and staff.
