“The plane was taking off,” he said, adding that witnesses told him there was “a bang” and then, without warning, the plane was on the ground.


A spokesman for Durango’s civil protection agency, Alejandro Cardoza, told local television the plane crashed about 10 kilometres from the airport.


Aeromexico said the Embraer 190 aircraft has a capacity for 100 passengers.


The website Planespotters.net said the Brazilian-made medium-range jet had seen service with two other airlines before joining the Aeromexico fleet.


The accident occurred near Guadalupe Victoria airport in the city of Durango, Rosas Aispuro tweeted.
