Sashi Cheliah has been crowned the winner of the 10th season of MasterChef Australia, after securing the show’s highest-ever score.

The South Australian prison officer snapped up 93 out of a possible 100 points during the two-part cook-off against Ben Borsht, meaning he takes home the 2018 title and a cash prize of $250,000.

Borsht put up a strong fight in the second half of the show, but Cheliah’s initial lead was too much to overcome. Borsht, a builder from Queensland, stumbled twice during round one: losing time while preparing his blue swimmer crab, and then failing to impress the judges with his fish batter.

The second half of the grand final – which saw the pair recreate a notoriously difficult Heston Blumenthal dish, comprised of an intricate meringue floating on milk ice-cream – was a much tighter race, with both contestants making mistakes thanks to a recipe that called for no less than 80 ingredients.

Both desserts were awarded 36 out of a possible 40 points.
