Melbourne City Council chief executive Ben Rimmer will stand down as the organisation’s leader after four years.

In a statement posted on the council’s website, he was candid about the affect of former lord mayor Robert Doyle’s departure in February over sexual harassment allegations from multiple women – including two city councillors.

“Since December last year, I have believed that a consequence of the investigation into inappropriate behaviour by Robert Doyle was that I would need to leave the organisation in order to assist councillors to move forward to normal relationships,” Mr Rimmer said.

“I am proud of how my team and I have handled the unprecedented circumstances of the investigation,” he said in the statement.

Mr Rimmer will depart in December.
