Wessels rues lost penalty try, backs Rebels for first finals berth

Rona’s hit wasn’t dirty or an attempt to shoulder charge or injure Koroibete, but “no arm” tackles are illegal in rugby and without it Koroibete would have surely scored the try.

The Rebels were incensed and demanded a penalty try but after a review referee Paul Williams opted to only give Rona a penalty and Melbourne ended up not taking any points from the play after dropping the ball soon after.

Wessels pointed the finger at his own players for making too many errors and being too rushed in attack during key moments but he also felt let down there wasn’t a sharper sanction after Rona stopped the try.

“I thought we were unlucky not to get a penalty try or, at least, a yellow card for Curtis Rona’s no arms tackle on Marika,” Wessels said.

“I mean Marika was going to score, 100 per cent he was going to score. Those moments change the game.”
