Reveal 1989 Tiananmen events, China asked

Image
READ MORE The American photographer who shot the iconic image of a man standing in front of tanks at the 1989 Tiananmen protests says it’s time for the Chinese government to come clean about the bloody events of 30 years ago. Jeff Widener was an Associated Press photo editor based in Bangkok when he was called in to help cover a growing student-led pro-democracy movement centered on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. The day after the military crushed the protests on June 3-4, Widener took the shot of an unknown man holding shopping bags facing a row of tanks. The photo of “tank man” became one of the most famous images of defiance of the 20th century. Widener says he doesn’t understand why China’s leaders won’t reveal the truth behind the crackdown. According to The Tiananmen Papers, a set of leaked documents that allegedly cover internal Communist Party meetings and reports, protests ignited across more than 100 cities in China at the end of May. “This was a nationwide mass movement — this

Russian company tells women to wear skirts

Image
READ MORE A company’s offer of extra payments for women who wear a skirt or a dress to work has sparked a furious backlash in Russia, with feminists calling it a return to the Middle Ages. Aluminium firm Tatprof promised 100 roubles ($A2.20) a day to female staff who sent bosses a selfie of themselves dressed according to rules that also required them to wear modest make-up and have their hair tied up. The “femininity marathon” would allow women to feel more feminine, and would brighten up the office for the – mainly male – staff, the company told news website TJurnal. Russians took to social media to express their outrage. “We are not here to make mans (sic) days brighter,” Instagram user jumagri wrote on the company’s page, while feminist blogger Zalina Marshenkulova described the move as “news from the Middle Ages”. The company declined to comment, pointing to remarks issued to local media in which it denied the campaign was sexist. They included the assertion that all the women wh

'One of the coolest things I've ever seen': Margaret River surfing dolphins amaze Slater

READ MORE “I just got that wave, and then I looked up and there’s a pod of dolphins right by me and a perfect blue set coming,” Coffin reflected. “I thought, ‘Oh my god this is insane’. I was really excited.” Two-time world champion and former Margaret River champion Florence crashed out on his first wave. But he recovered with a series of solid barrels to post a two-wave score of 11.83, edging past Australian Jack Freestone (9.16). “I wouldn’t say it was one of my best heats, but it’s always nice to make it through the close ones,” Florence said. China to blacklist 'unreliable' companies, force them to choose sides

READ MORE Analysts say China’s rare earths threat is highly credible because it could take years for the United States to ramp up production of its own rare earths – the domestic industry practically disappeared in the 1990s. Roughly 80 per cent of US imports come from China, according to the US Geological Survey. As of 2018, the top three rare earths producers were China, at 120,000 metric tons; Australia, at 20,000 metric tons; and the United States, at 15,000 metric tons, USGS figures show. The People’s Daily , the Communist Party’s official mouthpiece, carried a stark warning for the United States this week in an editorial about rare earths: “Don’t say we didn’t warn you.” That commentary surprised China experts because the People’s Daily , which often signals official positions with subtly codified language, uses that phrase sparingly: It famously appeared before China launched border attacks against India in 1962 and Vietnam in 1979. The Department of Defence is now seeking new f

Donald Trump Calls Meghan Markle ‘Nasty’ After She Refuses To Meet Him During UK State Visit

READ MORE Meghan Markle has been critical of Donald Trump in the past and now he’s learning about her comments. He’s calling her ‘nasty’ ahead of his trip to London where Meghan won’t meet with him. The British Royal Family is rolling out the red carpet for President Donald Trump and his wife Melania for a state visit, but Meghan Markle won’t have any part of it even though she’s American. She supported Hillary Clinton for president in 2016 and at the time called Trump “misogynistic” and “divisive.” She even joked about staying in Canada where Suits was filmed if Trump won the election. A reporter from UK’s The Sun sat down in the Oval Office with Trump on May 31 ahead of his London visit and when he told the president about Meghan’s comments, the 72-year-old responded “I didn’t know that. What can I say? I didn’t know that she was nasty.” However Trump seemed to know it probably wasn’t good to pick a fight with Prince Harry ‘s wife ahead of the visit, so he followed up the com

Angelina Jolie & Kids Enjoying ‘A Great Summer Escape’ To New Mexico: She Loves The ‘Privacy’

READ MORE Angelina Jolie relocated her brood to Albuquerque for work, giving the kids ‘privacy and extra freedom to live a more normal life.’ This is according to an eyewitness who saw the Jolie-Pitts at Target! Angelina Jolie , 43, and her kids are enjoying the change of scenery! The Jolie-Pitt pack — which reportedly included Maddox , 17, Pax , 15, Zahara , 14, Shiloh , 12, twins Knox and Vivienne , 10, and even Brad Pitt , 55 — were seen touching down in Albuquerque, New Mexico on May 15. “Angelina has set up a second home in Albuquerque, she’s shooting a movie there and it’s a great summer escape for the kids,” an eyewitness in Albuquerque EXCLUSIVELY told HollywoodLife . Angelina is in the desert state to shoot the upcoming wilderness thriller  Those Who Wish Me Dead , but the Oscar-winning actress isn’t letting work get in the way of family time ! “[Angelina’s kids] love going on location with her, it’s what they’ve always known,” the eyewitness continued. “They’re spending th

Cambage shows good touch in debut with Las Vegas Aces

READ MORE “I need to stop riding myself so hard right now, but it will come back soon.” “I’m on limited minutes for a little while until I get back into it – I just wanted to be out there tonight. “When I’m playing I don’t really notice anything, I’m just in the game – I’m feeling pretty good right now.” Australian Opals forward Alanna Smith played two minutes off the bench for the Mercury and received some unlucky foul calls, the rookie Victorian has done well in her earlier games. Cameron and Coniglio unstoppable as Giants lower Suns in bloodbath

Image
READ MORE Jeremy Cameron booted another five goals as Greater Western Sydney extended their winning streak over fellow AFL expansion outfit Gold Coast to seven games with a cruisy 83-point victory on Saturday. The Giants slammed on nine goals in a brutal final term to register a handy percentage-booster against the Suns, who kicked just three majors after quarter-time and were never in the game. One-sided: Harrison Himmelberg celebrates kicking another major for the Giants in Sydney. Credit: AAP Stephen Coniglio was superb, gathering 36 disposals, laying on eight tackles, kicking three goals and setting up four others in a virtuoso performance from the off-contract superstar. He ran the show in midfield alongside Josh Kelly (36 touches, five clearances), while Cameron fed off their work to solidify his leadership in the Coleman Medal race. He now has 38 goals for the year. The Giants finished up with 151 more possessions and 17 more inside-50s than Gold Coast, who made a competitive st

Ventriloquism for dummies: art gallery explores dislocated voices

Image
READ MORE Artist Simon Zoric with … Simon. Credit: Simon Schluter “Ventriloquy has a prehistory that goes back hundreds, if not thousands, of years,” he says, citing the Ancient Greek practice of gastromancy, which said stomach noises were messages from the dead. “Really what it’s about is the dislocation of the voice from the so-called speaking subject.” It’s there when, say, your boss toes the company line, or when someone begins to sound like their new partner. And we’re all familiar with the “mouthpiece” metaphor in politics: think Trump’s puppet to Putin’s master, or George W. Bush’s to Dick Cheney’s. “So much of what we hear our politicians say, or other people say, doesn’t really sound like the voice of a speaking subject but rather something speaking through them [as a proxy],” says Stern. Danielle Freakley’s work Your Second Hand is a pop-up shop with pre-loved clothes for sale; the price is that you’ll “unconsciously inherit certain thoughts and behaviours from its previous

Waratahs stand up to be counted when it counts most

READ MORE The fire isn’t gone from Bernard Foley, Michael Hooper, Adam Ashley-Cooper, Kurtley Beale, Sekope Kepu and Rob Simmons yet. Foley’s actually one of the toughest players in Australia. He had no right to get up from that horrible midair collision in the second half that saw him land on his upper back. Yet it didn’t stop him from committing completely to every subsequent tackle. If you think that anyone else is going to wear that Wallabies No.10 jersey at the Rugby World Cup you are living on Jeff Bezos’ space colony. That’s not to say Quade Cooper played badly. He didn’t. And he showed real physical commitment, but Foley is an intense competitor who got a rare rev-up from Daryl Gibson before the game and responded. However, the main player we have to talk about here is Simmons. He has made many, many people eat their words this year, including me. Yes, there was one knock on late in the second half after Reece Hodge basically threw his body into contact in what was a tough game

Hayden Young leads Vic Country to surprise first-up win

READ MORE Potential top-10 pick Hayden Young starred for Vic Country in their upset win over Vic Metro at the MCG on Saturday, leading the way with 29 disposals in a 13-point win. Vic Country were never headed after taking a slender lead into quarter-time, and the game was sealed midway through the final quarter when crumbing forward Ned Cahill swooped on a loose ball and snapped his second goal. Highly touted Vic Metro midfielder Matt Rowell played well with 28 disposals, showcasing his ability to put teammates into space when gathering the ball in tight, and he received good support from schoolmate Noah Anderson, who had 25 touches. However it was Vic Country who had the better players, with Josh Smith kicking three goals, Caleb Serong classy by foot and Lachlan Ash showing dash out of defence when the game was up for grabs. Vic Country’s Jesse Clark was also solid in the last quarter, playing as a deep defender with the ball spending plenty of time inside Vic Metro’s forward half. A

Dutch hostage killed in Philippines gun battle

Image
READ MORE A long-held Dutch hostage was shot and killed by his Abu Sayyaf captors when he tried to escape during a gunbattle in the southern Philippines, military officials say. Dutch birdwatcher Ewold Horn was fatally shot on Friday while trying to escape during a fierce firefight between the militants and army troops in the jungles of Sulu province’s mountainous Patikul town, said military commander Brigadier General Divino Pabayo Jr. At least six militants were killed and 12 others wounded in the nearly two-hour firefight. Eight soldiers also were wounded, the military said. Among those killed was the wife of Abu Sayyaf commander Radulan Sahiron, a militant long wanted by the United States and the Philippines. Dutch Foreign Minister Stef Blok said he would seek clarification from the Philippines on 59-year-old Horn’s killing. Horn, a Swiss friend and a Filipino companion were abducted by gunmen during a birdwatching trip in Tawi Tawi province, near Sulu, in 2012. Horn’s Filipino co

Virginia Beach shooting: At least 13 dead, including shooter

Image
READ MORE A disgruntled public utility employee opened fire on co-workers at city offices in Virginia Beach, Virginia, killing 12 people and wounding several others before he was fatally shot by police, authorities say. Virginia Beach Police Chief James Cervera said the mass shooting in the coastal resort city began as the gunman entered the public works and utilities building at the city municipal centre and “immediately and indiscriminately fired upon all the victims”. The chief later said that the suspect engaged in a “long-term gun battle” with law enforcement officers as police confronted him inside the building. One police officer was wounded in the shootout, but his bullet-proof vest saved his life, Mr Cervera said. The police chief said the suspect was armed with a .45-calibre handgun equipped with a “sound suppressor” device and was reloading his weapon with extended ammunition magazines as he moved through the building. “This is the most devastating day in the history of Vir

Watchdog says Iran in compliance with 2015 nuclear deal

Image
READ MORE The UN atomic watchdog says Iran continues to stay within the limitations set by the nuclear deal reached in 2015 with major powers, though its stockpiles of low-enriched uranium and heavy water are growing. In a confidential quarterly report distributed to member states, the International Atomic Energy Agency said Iran has stayed within key limitations set in the so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA. The deal is meant to keep Tehran from building atomic weapons in exchange for economic incentives. It has been complicated by the unilateral withdrawal of the US last year and Washington’s increased sanctions, which has been taking a toll on the Iranian economy. That has left the other signatories – Germany, Britain, France, Russia and China – struggling to come up with enough incentives to keep Iran in the deal. Earlier this month, Iran announced that if a way couldn’t be found within 60 days to shield it from US sanctions targeting its economy and oil indust

Winning is the best thing in the world: Zurhaar

READ MORE “Our leaders are massive. Jack Ziebell, Shaun Higgins, Robbie Tarrant, Jamie Macmillan – they’re just the best leaders I could ask for being a young player,” he said. “They just really shut down everything from the outside and focused on us as a small group and together we got the win tonight. “It’s just an unreal feeling. Winning a game of football is the best thing in the world, especially down at North. Our culture’s just unreal and even though we had a big week last week with lots of stuff going on we just came together, stuck together and that’s what we are at North Melbourne. “It’s a massive win against Richmond, they’re a quality side and we know we are when we can be and tonight we just proved to the AFL world that we’re a great side.” Article source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/sbsnews-topstories/~3/hCoOo8UILfk/kremlin-condemns-unfounded-reports-damascus-uses-chemical-weapons Share this: Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (O

Underworld come out on top with brilliant Vivid show

READ MORE Then there is nothing but space. Floating now, carried on voices and warmth. “I wanna hold you, laughing … carry me”, and you feel supported. One song, two songs, three songs … five that change your perspective, shift from action to trance-like reverie, that sometimes holds pain (“I’m the spoonman, she’s a wound”) that still feels more like living than hurting. But not alone. Never alone. There’s a generosity of spirit, a sense of care that comes from the stage – between each other, sure, but also out to us, in tone and sound even more so than words – that is quietly joyous. It permeates the room, now swaying and watching the dance of lights on seemingly porous eyeballs soaking up the effects that must play differently in every brain and yet it feels communal. Time passes, and there are voices in unison, the screen showing shapes forming singles and pairs, circles merging. A new song, yes, but an old message and a taster, a prelude, a build up, that take us to the precipice w

Hungary needs extended search for 21 missing in boat sinking

READ MORE A crew member from another tour boat, who helped rescue two South Korean women, said one of them was in shock. “I announced ‘Man overboard’ on the radio in Hungarian and German and we started the rescue,” Norbert Magyar told broadcaster RTL Klub. “We threw out two life-preservers which were caught by two Korean ladies and with the help of our colleagues we lifted them out of the water. The passengers helped too, because … the two women’s clothes absorbed a lot of water and it would have been very difficult to lift them out.” The boat’s sinking has touched a nerve in South Korea, where many are still traumatised over a 2014 ferry sinking that killed more than 300 people, mostly students. Survivors say they were lucky to grab onto a drifting lifeboat while looking in horror as others around them struggled in the dark, rainy waters, shouting for help. Their small sightseeing boat had almost finished its tour and was almost at a stop when the larger cruise ship hit it under a bri

Lady Gaga Nearly Falls Off Giant Robot Prop During Las Vegas Residency — Watch

READ MORE If it weren’t for two quick-thinking backup dancers, Lady Gaga would’ve probably face planted on her Las Vegas stage! The pop star slipped right off a giant, fire-breathing robot. Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” nearly slipped when she also slid off a robotic prop during her Las Vegas residency show on May 30. This robot was no WALL-E — it was gigantic, had claws, and spewed fire and steam. Mother Monster climbed on board the creature, clad in a futuristic suit herself, for a performance of her 2011 hit “Judas.” After delivering the open lines, Gaga, 33, took hold of her backup dancers’ hands to disembark the robot but had a tumble. Lucky for Gaga, her backup dancers’ reflexes were quick enough to keep the pop star from stopping the show mid-chorus. Rather than laughing at the on-stage faux pas, fans were sighing in relief that Gaga didn’t hurt her bones. She had broken her hip and left a hole in the area amid the Born This Way world tour in 2013. The injury forced her to cancel

Jennifer Lopez & Alex Rodriguez Reunite With Her Ex Marc Anthony At Kids School Function — Pics

READ MORE Jennifer Lopez and ex husband Marc Anthony are still so friendly, and they met up — along with her fiance Alex Rodriguez in tow — for the former couple’s son’s music recital. Even after their 2012 divorce Jennifer Lopez , 49, and Marc Anthony , 50, remained friends . The pair met up in Miami on May 30 to watch their 11-year-old son Max Muniz ‘s school music recital, even though JLo brought along her hunky fiance Alex Rodriguez , 43, as her plus one. Jennifer looked sunny in a yellow sleeveless tweet Gucci dress with a white Peter Pan collar. The belted waist accentuated her perfect curves and with a $2,700 price tag, the singer was likely the best dressed mom in the room. She wore her hair pulled back tightly and carried a white quilted leather purse, looking absolutely flawless. JLo’s former husband and future one couldn’t have been dressed more opposite. Alex was business casual in a crisp white shirt and black trousers while Marc showed up in faded jeans, a white shirt wi
