Sydney can find a way to stay open longer and still be safe

In the five years since lockout laws forced pubs in the CBD and Kings Cross to close their doors at 1.30am, Sydney has become safer but it has also crashed in the global rankings of cool.

In the hipster website Time Out’s list of best global cities, for example, Sydney has slumped to 39th, which puts it after Moscow, Delhi and sleepless Seattle. Even more humiliating, Melbourne, which used to be that dreary, pretentious wannabe city, has soared up the charts and is now ranked second. Melbourne has no lockout laws.

Time Out is not the best criterion for assessing a public policy measure but the fact that Sydney is now seen as more boring than Moscow is one indication that it is time to think again about whether the lockout laws are still the best way to control alcohol-related violence in the CBD.

The Herald supported the lockout laws when they were introduced in 2014 to stop an upsurge of violent street crime, including the high profile one-punch deaths of two young men, Thomas Kelly and Daniel Christie, in Kings Cross. The laws forced pubs to close their doors at 1.30am and to stop serving alcohol at 3am.
