Momentum grows for Michael Voss

Voss’ work ethic has never been an issue. But he made some poor decisions at Brisbane, notably appointing his friend, former Olympic canoeist and football novice Daniel Collins, to a top football job.

That appointment led to key departures across the coaches and elsewhere due to Collins’ confrontational style and his role as a middle man between Voss and his staff and players.

Collins lasted two seasons and Allan left for a new role at the Giants after one. The next head of football Dean Warren had also not worked in the role previously. The negative view also is that first-time coach Voss not only lacked strong guidance but also the empathy now considered a prerequisite in senior coaching. And some former players and coaches still recall the long meetings, something Voss has rectified at Port.

He took his team back into the finals in year one before famously rolling the dice in an end-of-season recruiting spree that included Brendan Fevola, Xavier Clarke and Amon Buchanan. This attempt to give Simon Black and co. one more crack at a premiership proved a spectacular failure.

In the process Voss fell out with his premiership teammate Daniel Bradshaw who ended his playing career at Sydney while the disillusioned Michael Rischitelli moved to the Gold Coast. (Bradshaw’s relationship with Voss will never be quite the same but has been rectified to the point where the former now attends Lions reunions and the two converse.)
