MCG Boxing Day Test pitch rated 'average' by ICC

READ MORE Facebook Twitter Facebook Messenger Pinterest Email print An “average” pitch rating by the ICC for the recently concluded Boxing Day Test between Australia and India has eased some pressure off the MCG and its ground staff, in the wake of last year’s “poor” rating. Given the dull draw played out last year between Australia and England, there was a sharp focus on the quality of the drop-in pitch in the lead-up to the third Test. The first two days of the match, which saw India pile up 7 for 443 declared, revived concerns about another dull surface, but the match turned on the third day with some unpredictable bounce and 15 wickets falling. India eventually won by 137 runs to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The ground staff had prepared for the game with short-term changes – the addition of a layer of sand between the trays and the concrete base, the reduction of pitches on the square from 10 to seven to aid more natural wear and tear, and the decision to leave more grass on

Hard yards in Italy paying off for Socceroo Chris Ikonomidis

READ MORE Now 23, Ikonomidis’ debut goal for the Socceroos has confirmed what he already knew: it was all totally worth it. “It had probably the biggest influence on my career, my time in Italy,” he said. “All my youth development over there, everything I learned was the Italian style – whether it was technically, tactically or mentally. I feel like I grew a lot going over there and it was probably the best decision I’ve ever made in my life. “The main thing that it gave me, apart from my skills, was the mental strength. I moved over by myself and had to sacrifice a lot to follow my dream of becoming a professional. The stuff I went through in Italy is definitely helping me today. It keeps me more calm and a little bit more centralised in all my thoughts.” Article source: https://hollywoodlife.com/2018/12/19/stars-who-used-fame-for-good-2018-pics-eg18/ Share this: Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Click to share on Google+

Cricket year in review: Ball tampering saga sees Australian game hit new low

Image
READ MORE Emotional: Darren Lehmann announces his resignation as Australian coach. Credit: AP His exit was a shock to everyone, particularly considering to this day he maintains he had no knowledge of Warner and Bancroft’s plan to change the condition of the ball. Lehmann was contracted until after next year’s World Cup and Ashes and given his favourable record with the side, it was a shame he wasn’t able to see it out until the end. The big controversy While the Longstaff Review was very much a watershed moment for the game, the ongoing discussion point since March was the suspensions of Smith, Warner and Bancroft. Many believed the 12-month suspensions handed down to the captain and vice-captain were extremely harsh, particularly given they were banned from playing domestic cricket as well. What a stupid look it was, however, to see the two running around in the Global Canada T20 League. Article source: https://hollywoodlife.com/2018/12/19/stars-who-used-fame-for-good-2018-pics-eg18/

No compensation for Sydney train passengers affected by delays after storm

Image
READ MORE Delays are still affecting train lines across Sydney more than 20 hours after lightning and storms struck on New Year’s Eve, damaging overhead wiring and signal equipment. Premier Gladys Berejiklian said there is no plan to provide commuters with a refund or compensation.  “That is not currently in our plans, no,” she told reporters in Sydney.  NSW Opposition leader Michael Daley said the government’s handling of the situation is “just not good enough”.  “What an international embarrassment this is,” he said comparing the organisation for the fireworks with the meltdown on Sydney trains. “The [train] system has got to get over a bit of rain. Eighteen hours later there is still a shutdown. There’s something seriously wrong here, and the premier has to explain why.” Wild weather battered Sydney on Monday evening, causing extensive delays and cancellations across the network. Multiple major city-bound lines were affected from 6pm on Monday, including T1, T2, T3 and T8. A spokes

Greg Hunt warns pharmacists and doctors on medicine information

READ MORE She said many CMIs, which could run into seven pages, were too long and complicated, making patients unlikely to read them even if they were provided in paper form. Communication Research Institute chief executive David Sless agreed, saying the documents did not “invite reading”. Professor Sless, who worked on the design of CMIs in the 1990s, said Australia had once led the world in medicine communications but had “gone to the back of the class”, with the documents “designed for something that is basically one up from a typewriter”. “It’s a bit of a national disgrace,” he said. Australian Medical Association president Tony Bartone said CMIs were “too dense, too confusing, too non-user-friendly”. New Year rail chaos underscores 'vulnerabilities' in Sydney network

READ MORE Mr Collins said on the on-time performance was worse than the same period a year earlier, when the rail operator beat its target every month, due to a combination of factors such as weather-related events and an increase in services. The introduction of 24 new Waratah trains , which would replace decades-old S-Sets, should improve the network’s reliability, especially on T2 and T8 lines, he said. But Labor leader Michael Daley said the severe disruptions on one of the busiest nights of the year showed that “something is seriously wrong” with the train network, and he cited a $130 million cut to rail maintenance last year. “If you neglect the system, it lets you down,” he said. “This is just not good enough. The system has got to be able to get over a bit of rain. Even if it knocked out parts of the system last night, 18 hours in there are still some cancellations and shutdowns … and the government has to explain why.” Article source: https://hollywoodlife.com/2018/12/19/stars

Do you really need to be school dux to be a doctor?

READ MORE “Twenty years ago I would not be the position I’m in and I’m grateful,” Ms Nash said. Monash University’s program aims to tackle the shortage of Indigenous doctors, but it also raises some important questions about the prerequisites required to make a successful medical student. In 2017, the average ATAR of students who received an offer to study a bachelor degree of medicine at Monash was 99.25. But as the faculty of medicine’s deputy dean Professor Michelle Leech explained “the reason why these score have been driven so high up … is to do with demand”. For every one place in the course, there are 14 or 15 eligible applicants who have excelled academically and also done well in the aptitude test called the UMAT, meaning that university administrators have to introduce stringent selection criteria, including an interview, to whittle candidates down. Police having a Field Day: drug warnings fall on deaf ears

READ MORE The Herald also witnessed a young man tackled by police when he seemingly ingested something from his pocket after a positive indicator from a drug detection dog. “The possession or supply of prohibited drugs is a serious criminal offence. Those thinking of bringing substances into the event are reminded there will be uniformed and plain-clothed police patrolling the festival, which will include the use of drug-detection dogs. Not only are they illegal, prohibited drugs can be extremely harmful to your health, and are potentially life-threatening, particularly combined with alcohol,” police operation commander, Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Bell said in a statement on New Year’s Eve. Despite the four deaths since September, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has reiterated her government will not consider pill testing. “There is no such thing as a safe illegal drug and I urge everyone who is attending a festival to stay safe and think carefully about the decisions they make a

Mother to hunger strike for 46 days for healthier food in childcare centres

READ MORE Ruby O’Rourke will deprive herself of food in a hunger strike calling for stronger regulations that ensure Australian children in childcare receive quality food.   She’s promised to go 46 days without food. It’s a decision Ms O’Rourke knows is drastic but believes she has been left with no other choice. “I want the government to see what malnutrition looks like,” she told SBS News. Ms O’Rourke is the founder of Healthy Australia, a not-for-profit advocating for the health and welfare of families nationally. Speaking to SBS News, she talks with determination in her voice well aware of the challenge that lie ahead.  Ruby wants to draw attention to the ‘malnutrition’ of Australian children in childcare – a problem she believes is not being adequately addressed. A collaboration between Healthy Australia and the University of Newcastle found that only five per cent of Australian childcare centres were meeting Australian dietary standards last year. “If the government is not going

Kevin Spacey will plead not guilty to indecent assault charge

Image
READ MORE The indecent assault allegation first came to light in November 2017 when former Boston TV anchor Heather Unruh told reporters that Spacey groped her teenage son during a chance encounter in a crowded bar. Kevin Spacey in House of Cards . Credit: Netflix It is alleged that Spacey bragged about the size of his penis, unzipped the alleged victim’s pants and assaulted him after buying him multiple drinks. The alleged victim filmed part of the encounter, according to court documents . Neither Spacey nor his lawyers have addressed the allegation publicly. However, the actor released a video last week in the voice of Frank Underwood . In the bizarre clip, Spacey said he wasn’t going to “pay the price” for something he “didn’t do”. It was unclear whether he was addressing the criminal charge. “Some believed everything [said about me] and have just been waiting with bated breath to confess it all,” Spacey said. “You and I both know it’s not that simple. Not in politics, not in life.
