Why Mal knows Tedesco still reigns supreme over Ponga

The only thing Ponga had over Tedesco was his kicking game, said Meninga, and that was only because “Teddy doesn’t need to kick at the Roosters or for NSW”.
“Teddy is the incumbent [Kangaroos No.1], he deserves to be fullback, he’s playing great enough to maintain that position,” Meninga said.
“Unless something drastic was to happen, Teddy will get the gig. It’s a great match-up. It’s the incumbent against the second best fullback in the game.
“‘Browny’ [Newcastle coach Nathan Brown] spoke about him on Fox the other week and how Ponga doesn’t watch much footy but James Tedesco is the one he keeps his eye on. He studies Teddy’s game.”
Meninga, who will rely on Tedesco to get the job done against New Zealand and Tonga at the end of the year – not to mention two heavy international calendars in 2020 and 2021, the World Cup year – said there were several reasons that separated him from the flame-haired Maroons’ megastar.
