NSW selections under microscope with Wallabies yet to be rested

The Rebels and Brumbies largely chose to take their medicine early. McKellar rested Scott Sio, Allan Alaalatoa and David Pocock in the first half of the season, only to lose the latter altogether. Wessels rested a raft of his top players against the Sharks in Durban, knowing the team had a conference derby against the Reds to prepare for on the back of the long-haul flight home.

The Reds were privately dismayed that gun young playmaker Isaac Lucas, whom they had planned to move into the No.10 jersey at the back end of the season, was quarantined for Junior Wallabies duty last month.

Brad Thorn’s side had been hit by injury to Hamish Stewart and wanted Lucas to play in their crucial derby clash with NSW, but were knocked back.

The Queensland Rugby Union were incensed by the decision but, ultimately, honoured the agreement they made that if they had not played Lucas for a certain number of minutes, he would become eligible for national duty.
