West Australian Premier draws fire for hints at state climate target

At the press conference last week, Mr McGowan did not rule out taking action if the Commonwealth did not increase its efforts on climate change.

“What we’re saying is before we did anything, the state as opposed to the EPA, we’d have full consultation and full discussion with industry to make sure that we understood all the nuances of anything the state might do,” he said.

“We think the Commonwealth should act and not defer to the states, but anything the state does, we’ll consult fully with industry before such time as we do anything.”

The Premier repeated his call for a national agreement to reduce emissions rather than risking the issue becoming a political football.

In a written statement released by his office on Saturday, Mr McGowan said this had been the state’s long-held position.
