That he is likely to make his Test debut in the Ashes opener in Birmingham on August 1 and, all going well, be selected for the four-Test tour of South Africa over the Christmas and January period means he would be unavailable for the BBL anyway.

Australian bowling coach Adam Griffith, who is also in charge of the Hurricanes, has played a role in Archer’s progress.

“Obviously, I have history with Jof at the Hurricanes, and he did a great job for us there and was a great competitor. It’s the same as anything as a coach, you just want to see players perform the best they can … he spent two years there (with the Hurricanes) and we’ve got him for a couple more years at the Hurricanes so it’s good he’s doing well,” he said.

It may be good, but his contract with the Hurricanes is now unlikely to be fulfilled.

That’s a significant blow for a BBL desperate for more star power, with network bosses complaining about the lack of added punch last summer when ratings and spectator interest diminished.
