SCG grounds manager moves on after turf drama takes it toll

There will be more challenges to come next year with the venue to host international cricket through to mid March, a week out from the likely start of the AFL season.

There has been increased traffic on the SCG this football season due to the redevelopment of the adjacent Allianz Stadium. That venue is not expected to be open until early 2022.

Outside of the cricket season, the SCG usually stages AFL and some NRL matches but has also hosted Super Rugby and A-League games.

The surface, which has been branded as “dangerous” and “unsafe”, was shredded by scrums during a Super Rugby game between the Waratahs and the Reds, forcing the Trust to replace 3,000 square metres of turf.

Melbourne Victory coach Kevin Muscat was furious after midfielder Terry Antonis hurt his knee on the cricket square in an A-League game in April though he was later cleared of serious damage.
