So strict is censorship of the June 4, or “wu si” anniversary that many young Chinese don’t know students were killed in the centre of Beijing.
The Australian government has declined to comment on the speech.
Chief executive of the Perth USAsia Centre, Gordon Flake, said Wei responding to the Tiananmen question was unexpected, and showed the level of confidence of the Chinese military.
“He was saying ‘we solved the problem’, in other words, our pressure works,” says Flake, who was in the audience.
In his speech, Wei delivered a strong message warning Taiwan not to seek independence from China, and against “foreign interference in the Taiwan question”.
