“The gem cannot be polished without friction, nor man perfected without trials.” Confucius
When you get selected for Australia it’s just the greatest day of your life. Being dropped from the Australian cricket team is the complete opposite. It’s the most horrible, gut-wrenching time. When you have just been dropped from the Test team, you feel that everyone is looking at you as if you have committed a serious crime. You can’t do anything about it, you feel their eyes, you put your blinkers on and just try to trot on.
Your subconscious knows why you have been dropped, but you just won’t listen. You build this false front of hope and confidence and you quickly find out who your real friends are. You know you need to do some soul-searching, but you are apprehensive about what you might find.
When you find that spare 30 minutes to work out the ”why”, that is when is you find out how much you love the game. AFL great Kevin Sheedy once said to me after I was dropped: “The game is asking you a question: What do you need to do to get better? Do you want it enough?”
You can only do two things: put your head down and sulk or get up and do something about it. This is where you need mentors, friends and advisors to be brutally honest on where you stand. It is quite a humbling experience. We don’t like criticism at the best of times, but you know something is broken and you need to fix it. And that is the key, to admit that you have a problem. That’s the hard bit over, now what do you do?
