A man’s skull has been fractured after he was struck by a hammer in an apparent road-rage incident in Sydney’s west, police say.
Emergency services were called to Ettalong Street in Auburn about 3.40pm on Thursday and found the 65-year-old man lying in the street with serious head injuries.
Police were told two men began fighting after a minor road-rage incident – one driver apparently cut the other off while trying to merge – when the 65-year-old man was hit in the head with a hammer.
The Guildford man was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment for a fractured skull. The man later discharged himself from hospital.
After speaking to witnesses, police arrested a 25-year-old man who was parked in a Volkswagon Golf near the crash scene. Police said they found a hammer in the car, and it was seized for forensic examination.
The 25-year-old, who is also from Guildford, was taken to Auburn Police Station where he was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to a person with intent.
Refused bail, he will appear in Burwood Local Court on Friday.
Police continue to investigate the incident, and are appealing for anyone with information or dashcam vision of the incident to contact Auburn Police or Crime Stoppers.
