Beijing: Hopes that a trade deal will be reached by the United States and China have been raised after both sides said substantial progress was made in Washington this week, and China agreed to the “enforcement” of any promises.

US President Donald Trump said it would be “the biggest trade deal ever made” – if agreement was reached – and appeared to waver from his earlier tweet that a March 1 deadline for the introduction of new tariffs may have to be postponed.

China committed to “vigorously expand imports of US agricultural products, energy products, industrial manufactured goods and service products,” reported Chinese state news agency Xinhua.

Nick Coyle, chief executive of the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Beijing, said the chamber was watching the negotiations closely, “particularly in the agriculture and energy sectors given their obvious importance to the Australia-China relationship”.
