Cowboy up: Valentine insists NFL dream is close to his heart

American football is different. Holmes is being prepared as a kick returner but also as a running back and wide receiver, meaning he needs to explode from a standing start.

“It’s a much different style of running to what I am used to,” he says. “It’s more getting the yard distance right: knowing when to cut, knowing when to change angles. Back home, I just flowed with the play and made my own space. Here, you have to run your route, beat your man, get rid of him, get into space and catch the ball.”

Says Byner: “For the running back position, you have to have some level of intelligence. You have to understand what everybody else is doing and what the offensive scheme is trying to do, both in the pass and the running game. If you understand what the offensive scheme is trying to do, you can understand how you fit into it.”

Sounds easy enough …

Holmes is yet to have reservations about his decision to leave the NRL and come here.
