Of all the Western Sydney Wanderers’ teams that have done it tough this season, it’s their most depleted squad that could deliver the club its only triumph. Seemingly against all odds, their National Youth League side have reached Friday’s grand final despite the team reduced to the bare bones every game. Coach Arthur Diles has guided the young Wanderers to a second successive decider despite never having his full squad available this season.

That’s due to the struggles of the A-League team and head coach Markus Babbel’s of promoting youth to make-up for injuries and underperforming senior players and that won’t change on Friday. Against Brisbane Roar at ANZ Stadium, Diles will be without youth players; goalkeeper Nicholas Suman, defender Tate Russell and midfielders Marc Tokich and Keanu Baccus – the latter never having played for the youth team he’s eligible for having spent the season with the A-League team. All four have been called-up for Friday night’s A-League game against the Jets.

The NYL squad has received a boost with Abraham Majok, Mathieu Cordier, Tass Moudoukoutas back from the A-League squad while Kosta Grozos has made his return from injury.

Despite being depleted of first choice players week in, week out, the Wanderers still topped their conference with six wins from eight games. That they made the grand final is already a triumph of their depth and investment into their youth academy and retain their NYL trophy would go some way to providing fan optimism for next season, when they move into their new stadium.
