Tim Tszyu and John Hopoate, at opposite ends of their careers, came together at the Tszyu Boxing Academy on Thursday to spruik next week’s Star of the Ring promotion. In their own way, both are at a crossroads.

Hopoate, banned from the sport he made his name in, is taking on Paul Gallen more than a decade after he became the Australian heavyweight champion. Tszyu, meanwhile, is facing his toughest test yet, Englishman Denton Vassell. Like his famous father Kostya, Tszyu is chasing championship belts and this is a crucial step towards that goal.

The event showcases professional pugilists like Tszyu as well as former footballers with varying experience in the ring. Hopoate, a 45-year old father of 11 children, is rated a $5 outsider. Yet a large audience, either live at the Hordern Pavillion or via pay-per-view, is expected to tune in for a fight in which both protagonists are comfortable playing the villain.
