The big story: Meet the power behind Patriots' throne

Sounds like flushing money down the toilet, doesn’t it, especially when grassroots footy is struggling? Western Suburbs District Junior Rugby League went into liquidation earlier this month.

The NRL insists the spend was no more than $10,000 for three billboards for two weeks, although it’s hard to see what they actually achieve. NRL Head of Commercial Andrew Abdo came up with the idea. He’ll be in Atlanta for the match — at the expense of a sponsor, we’re told, not the NRL.

THE NEWS IN BRIEFS
Tickets to this year’s Super Bowl are quite affordable in comparison to other years. According to leading reseller StubHub, the cheapest seats are going for about US$2800 ($3891). Tickets on the 50-yard line on the lower-level tier are $45,000 ($62,548). Seems fair.

Luckily, you can make up for the ticket cost with dirt-cheap food: hotdogs are $2 and beers just $5.

Whatever you do, just stay to the end. This column covered Super Bowl LI two years ago when the Patriots played Atlanta in Houston. The international press were seated in the cheaper section next to fans who had coughed up about US$5000 ($6949) for their seats.
