One of the nation’s two major stevedoring companies, Patrick Ltd, had agreed to take the running with a plan to sack its union workforce and replace it with an entire new group of non-union staff.

Mr Howard said it was the action of Patrick, headed by Chris Corrigan, that should be recognised by the businesses of today.

“They are owed, in my view, a debt of gratitude by the business community of Australia,” he said.

Patrick would lock out its workforce in April 1998, replacing it with a non-union group of workers overnight.

Cabinet had signed off on imposing a levy on container movements to pay out the redundancies for Patrick’s sacked workers. The official cabinet document on the decision fails to mention the name of the company.
