You can say this for the ABC’s New Year’s Eve broadcast: it was brutally, fantastically review-proof.


What was not to love? It was a stellar if safe-as-houses celebration. Even if you were inclined not to love it, you’d be a sorry soul if you found much to hate. If ABC enemies in the Parliament want to make a fuss about this year’s harbourside festivities as delivered by the national broadcaster, there are thin pickings for any future Senate Estimates hearings.

One can’t rule out that some determined One Nation nut job might find solace in slowing down their video cassette recorder to find that, indeed, there was an audible obscenity.


It came during the rendition of The Angels’ classic Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again?, a song which has come to include a notorious audience shout-back during the chorus. ABC technicians, on the alert for controversy, managed to keep the crowd to a dull whisper for most of the song – but thankfully, one or two faint bursts of “No way, get f—ed, f— off” managed to pierce the harbour night.
