He was also inspired by meeting the survivors of the tragedy, including Walter Mikac, a pharmacist whose wife, Nanette, and daughters, six-year-old Alannah and three-year-old Madeline, were among the people killed by Bryant.
“One of the jobs of prime minister is to comfort, console, hug and embrace. What you must do in a situation like that is act naturally, don’t hold back. People have lost someone. They want you to understand that and comfort them. You must never complicate that by losing control of your emotions,” Mr Howard said.
