Monash University’s program aims to tackle the shortage of Indigenous doctors, but it also raises some important questions about the prerequisites required to make a successful medical student.
In 2017, the average ATAR of students who received an offer to study a bachelor degree of medicine at Monash was 99.25.
But as the faculty of medicine’s deputy dean Professor Michelle Leech explained “the reason why these score have been driven so high up … is to do with demand”.
For every one place in the course, there are 14 or 15 eligible applicants who have excelled academically and also done well in the aptitude test called the UMAT, meaning that university administrators have to introduce stringent selection criteria, including an interview, to whittle candidates down.
