Powered by poo: How this power station keeps the lights on

How does the power station that provides electricity for one in ten Australians get ready for one of the most challenging summers on record?
The energy market operator believes this summer will be one of the hottest on record, but Origin says its Eraring power station, the largest coal-fired plant in the country, has spent millions of dollars and the last few months getting ready to provide energy for around 3 million homes.
The power station will do this, in part, with poo that is turned into steam.
The NSW, Lake Macquarie-based power plant will keep the lights on each by using around 24,000 tonnes of coal during times of peak demand and drawing on 11 million litres of water a day – or one billion litres a year – from the adjacent lake, and sewerage.
