Hotel giant Marriott International has revealed that its Starwood reservations database has been hacked and that up to 500 million guests’ data could be exposed, including passport numbers and credit card details.

The hack may be one of the biggest such breaches in corporate history, only below the Yahoo hack in 2013 when 3 billion users were exposed.

The data breach involved information mined from the reservations database for Starwood properties, which include Sheraton, Westin and St Regis hotels, among others. An unauthorised party had accessed the database since 2014, company officials said. The breach included names, email addresses, passport numbers and payment information, according to the hotel giant.

“We deeply regret this incident happened,” Arne Sorenson, Marriott’s chief executive, said in a news release. “We fell short of what our guests deserve and what we expect of ourselves. We are doing everything we can to support our guests, and using lessons learned to be better moving forward.”
