Labor appears to have at least 73 votes in support of referral: its own 69 MPs as well as Adam Bandt, Ms Banks, Rebekha Sharkie and Andrew Wilkie.


Mr Wilkie has cautioned, however, that the matter should be decided by “high principle” and there could be grounds to refer other MPs as well.


Labor is also seeking the support of Cathy McGowan, who favours a “job lot” referral of all MPs with questions over their eligibility, and Dr Phelps, who is facing questions over her own eligibility because her medical practice benefits from Medicare payments to patients.


If the government secured a vote from Bob Katter, Labor would need the support of both Ms McGowan and Dr Phelps to prevail.
