Ms Bates, who heads Urban Realists Planning and Health Consultants, and who was a key player in encouraging condom use among sex workers during the HIV pandemic in the 1980s, said findings relating to condom usage in the west pointed to a need for further sexual health education in the wider community and more peer support opportunities among sex workers, especially those new to the industry.

Lena Van Hale, who manages Magenta, a support and advocacy organisation for WA sex workers, said it was important not to frame demand from clients as the sole cause behind the trend towards ‘natural’ sex, without the context of sex workers’ experiences under criminalisation.

“Sex workers have not been forced to relax their safer sex practices simply because they were asked to,” she said.

“We would caution against giving undue weight to demand from clients as the driving force behind the recent declines in rates of condom use — a trend that is reflected in rates of condom use generally.”

Ms Van Hale said the ability of sex workers to negotiate safer sex practices was also affected by others factors identified in the study, including an economic recession and the impact of criminal laws she says prevent sex workers from employing reasonable safety precautions.
