In Trump’s mind, tariffs will not only bring back manufacturing jobs from Mexico but also stop drug trafficking and illegal migration.


This is magical thinking dressed up as policy-making, and it’s alarming the President’s usual business and political allies.


Glenn Hamer, the chief executive of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the new tariff was “a prescription for a self-induced economic slowdown”.


“The president’s announcement is baffling and, if carried out, will be terribly damaging,” he said.


Republican Senator Charles Grassley slammed it as “a misuse of presidential tariff authority”.
