The Canberra co-captain moved on and has since become one of the most respected players in the game and arguably the second-best dummy-half behind Cameron Smith.

The images of Wighton, however, were far less flattering and are still fresh in the minds of a lot of league fans. Wighton was captured wobbling down a Canberra street in February last year before he turned on several passers-by.

He pleaded guilty to five counts of assault and one of public urination. He was handed a two-month suspended jail term, fined $30,000 by the NRL and suspended for 10 games.

As Wighton told the Herald at the start of the year: “What are my thoughts? I was a drunken idiot. I’ve watched it [the CCTV footage] couple of times. It was mainly to recap that night. From the word go I couldn’t remember. I had had one too many beverages. It was a wild night on the town. It wasn’t good.”

Wighton was so intoxicated that night that when Raiders officials quizzed him the next morning after they learned about the incident, he initially had no clue what they were talking about.
