Sam Burgess has revealed he was in regular contact with James Roberts before he signed with South Sydney, and says he is confident the speedster won’t be a liability for the Redfern club.

Souths also have no plans to enforce a booze ban on the man known as the “Jet”, despite unflattering images of an intoxicated Roberts being carried out of a party in Brisbane a couple of months ago.

As the 26-year-old prepares to play for Souths this Friday against Newcastle, 2840 days since he last pulled on the red and green, Burgess told The Sun-Herald: “He strengthens the team, he came on a lot less money than what he’s probably worth on the market, which says a lot about him, and he’s a Souths junior.

“The culture here is strong enough and I’m not worried about James [being a liability]. I’ve spoken to him on the phone, he’s clear minded, he’s excited, he wants to play football and South Sydney is the club for him.
