Washington: Kellyanne Conway, counsellor to US President Donald Trump, says she was the victim of sexual assault and that women who survive such experiences should be heard.
“I feel very empathetic, frankly, for victims of sexual assault and sexual harassment and rape,” Conway told the CNN’s State of the Union presenter Jake Tapper while defending the Supreme Court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, who has been accused of sexual assault by one woman and sexual misconduct by two other women.
She then paused and cleared her throat.
“I’m a victim of sexual assault,” she said. “I don’t expect Judge Kavanaugh or Jake Tapper or Jeff Flake or anybody to be held responsible for that. You have to be responsible for your own conduct.”
She was referring to Republican Senator Jeff Flake, who was confronted by two women as he entered a lift on Friday who said they were sexual abuse victims. They begged him not to vote for Kavanaugh.
