Birmingham: An Australian company at the centre of a huge data breach that has seriously embarrassed the governing conservative party on the eve of its conference has apologised for revealing the personal data of senior ministers.

The Conservative Party conference app was built by Crowdcomms – an Australian company operating in the UK, Ireland, Singapore and Australia. It builds apps for organisations holding major conferences.

The Tory party had contracted the company to help modernise its image ahead of its annual conference, where leadership tensions and internal ructions over Brexit are set to dominate.

The app allowed people to log in using another user’s email and view and change their data, including mobile phone numbers and emails.

In a statement, the company said the error was fixed within 30 minutes.
