Cooper Cronk all but ruled himself out of the NRL grand final more than 48 hours before helping the Roosters to an emphatic win over Melbourne, an individual effort labelled by coach Trent Robinson as befitting of “legend status”.

Cronk phoned Roosters coach Trent Robinson on Friday morning to almost declare he wouldn’t be able to overcome a shoulder injury – described only by the club early in the week as a “severe” rotator cuff injury – which was later revealed to be much worse.

But a painkilling injection – one of four Cronk received in the lead-up to the decider – made at a different juncture did the trick as the minor premiers torched his old club Melbourne 21-6 at ANZ Stadium on Sunday night.

The Roosters hid the severity of Cronk’s injury all week and the 34-year-old carried his left arm almost by his side for 78 minutes as he barked orders and steered his team around the park while rarely touching the ball.

Asked if he’d seen a tougher performance, Robinson said: “Never. I’ve seen guys get injured in games, but I haven’t seen a guy fracture his scapula – a complete break through the scapula – and then play 60 minutes with it [in the preliminary final]. And then have to deal with it all week.
