A woman who was sexually abused by opera singer David Lewis as a teenager has given a powerful victim impact statement to a Sydney court as she fought back tears.

The woman, now in her late 30s, was a member of the children’s chorus for Opera Australia in the mid-1990s and worked on multiple shows where she met Lewis, who was 34.

Lewis, a full-time member of the adult chorus, struck up a friendship with the then 14-year-old during which she confided in him about trauma from her childhood.

The first time Lewis touched the teenager, the pair were standing next to the stage behind a curtain while a performance or dress rehearsal was going on. He kissed and groped her, putting his hand inside her underwear.

“I was completely overwhelmed,” the woman said of the encounter. “I also felt so afraid that someone would catch us and I would get into trouble.
