Boys are trailing behind girls when it comes to reading and writing, a new study by Queensland researchers has found.

Professor David Neumann, Associate Professor Glenda Andrews and PhD candidate David Reilly from Griffith University’s school of applied psychology, analysed a sample of 3.9 million children in the USA to come up with the findings.

They found for reading, gender differences started early and widened over time, with girls outnumbering boys in the higher range of proficiency.

Researcher David Reilly said most research focused solely on reading ability, which had led to an underestimation of the gender gap when it came to writing.

“The writing ability results are particularly important as this will impact students in high school writing assessment pieces and [who] want to enter [further education],” he said.
