Wessels said he saw so much improvement in his side that there were plenty of positives.
“It hurts not to win the game, but from a performance prospective I was just incredibly proud of the boys – they played well,” Wessels said.
“The Waratahs had two intercept scores. If you look at our squad from the start of the season, we didn’t have Tetera Faulkner, Jordan Uelese, Adam Coleman, Will Genia, Marika Koroibete or Dickie Hardwick, so for me that shows our depth is growing.
“In order to be a championship team in the long run that is a really pleasing thing.”
The Rebels have 35 points and they and the Argentina Jaguares (34 points) hold the final two wildcard places. But the Durban Sharks are chasing them on 28 points and were to play the Jaguares in Buenos Aires early Sunday (AEST). A bonus-point win by the Sharks would make for a nervous end to the season.
