Cleary crashes back to earth as lifeless Panthers succumb to Manly

That Penrith led 8-6 at the break was a minor miracle, given the amount of football they coughed up on their own line.

Manly had their chances in superb field position, but only took advantage once when Joel Thompson powered over after an inside ball from NSW star Tom Trbojevic.

On half-time, Brad Parker looked to have scored another, but his touch down in the right corner was sent up to the Bunker and ruled a no-try. They confirmed an obstruction in the lead-up where Shaun Lane ran into James Maloney, albeit 20m infield from where Parker looked to have scored.

Five minutes earlier Penrith had reclaimed the lead when Dallin Watene-Zelezniak surged over from close range, running onto a clever inside ball from Sione Katoa.

Manly 18 (J Thompson, M Wright, T Hodkinson tries, T Hodkinson 2, D Cherry-Evans goals) def Penrith 10 (D Watene-Zelezniak try, Maloney 3 goals)
Referees: Gerard Sutton, Matt Noyen
HT: Penrith 8-6
Crowd: 12,755 at Panthers Stadium
