Labor leader Bill Shorten is expected to make a renewed pitch to families and low-paid workers on Sunday and reveal a major infrastructure pledge for Western Sydney, following a messy week that fuelled speculation about his leadership.
In a speech to the NSW Labor conference, Mr Shorten plans to ramp up his class war rhetoric against the Turnbull government, saying changes to Sunday penalty rates to take effect from today, along with changes to childcare payments, mean “families will once again be worse off”.
“Today shop assistants and cooks and receptionists and cleaners will have their penalty rates cut again,” an excerpt of his speech notes says.
“To everyone who’s spending today washing dishes, or cleaning hotel rooms or stacking shelves … unlike the Liberals, I don’t think you’re greedy, or selfish, I don’t think you’re an expense the economy can’t afford. I know you need the money, I know the difference it makes each week.”
Labor has pledged to repeal the penalty rate cut if it wins government.
