Of course social media companies need to be held accountable if found to have spread ‘‘abhorrent, violent material’’, but that is only one part of the problem (‘‘Time to make social media act responsibly’’, March 30-31).
Radical right-wing terrorists may be pulling the trigger but the strings, I would argue, are being pulled by the ‘‘mums’ and dads’’’ media who regularly give voice to the likes of Pauline Hanson and who employ racist shock jocks to incite violence. Social media in their variety of forms have a lot of benefits. But, as usual, it takes something cataclysmic, such as the Christchurch tragedy, to draw our attention to the negatives, and Richard Glover’s essay does a excellent job of drawing them together in a way that shows that it is very much time to deal with them with the effective measures that are available, and must now be enforced by governments rather than continuing to resort to the proven ineffectuality of self-regulation (“The seatbelt moment for social media”, Spectrum, March 30-31). – Anne Ring, Coogee

Nobel Peace Prize 2019: vote 1 Jacinda Ardern (‘‘‘It’s going to take a long time to get over it’’’, March 30-31). The voice of reason, compassion and truth. – Merinda Antill, Lake Conjola
I find it interesting that Ardern is ‘‘outstanding’’ even though she is in coalition with NZ First party’s Winston Peters (quote ‘‘we are at risk of alien cultures’’). But Scott Morrison is ‘‘pathetic’’ if he doesn’t preference One Nation last. – Laurie Le Claire, Epping
