But, do certain types of pyjamas improve our sleep?
Probably not, says Dr Moira Junge, health psychologist and spokeswoman for the Sleep Health Foundation, who worries people who suffer from poor sleep can jinx themselves by fretting about what they wear to bed.
“A lot of people get really worried, overthinking their sleep,” she says. “You could go to the gym and say, ‘Oh I don’t have this really great pair of shorts’. But you can do the same workout in your trackies.”
Dr Junge says there are so many other steps – switching off devices, having a consistent bedtime – that have a greater effect on the quality of sleep.
Professor Sean Drummond, sleep researcher at the Monash Institute of Cognitive and Clinical Neurosciences, agrees that pyjamas alone will not give you a perfect night’s sleep, although he says wearing sleepwear as part of a regular nighttime routine can let our brain know it is time to rest.
