Rodney's rocket: Essendon need a Plan B

Brisbane have altered their style by adding more focus to their defensive actions. Through the development of their young brigade, and additions to the midfield, they are also attacking the opposition with strong running. The Bulldogs, too, have modified their game with a more direct approach to goal, rather than over-possession. This is still a work in progress.

If you’re not prepared to change in AFL, you will be left behind. Hawthorn, under Alastair Clarkson, have been a step ahead of the competition for quite a few years. Clarkson was even experimenting with, and altering, his game plan during the ’13, ’14, and ’15 years of premiership success. In 2018, we saw more of a handball focus, rather than the kicking of the ‘‘three-peat’’ years.

Richmond changed with great success in 2017 and 2018 – but the Pies have worked them out. They will need to reinvent themselves, and not only because of injuries.

Essendon are one side that do not seem to be implementing anything new or adding to their game
plan. Effort, intensity, and contest should all be givens in the AFL – not part of the game plan. The
Bombers were smashed in round one in the contest and effort by GWS. There was a bit of sameness
about their midfield and set-ups (even with Dylan Shiel). The contest and effort improved in round  two, but still did not produce a definitive style. They were known for quick ball movement in the second half of 2018, but with opposition doing their homework, this is not evident. Turnovers are very high in number. Their entries inside 50 are haphazard. Even against the Giants, they generated 52 inside-50s but with only 35 per cent efficiency to hit the scoreboard. They seem to be playing on instinct without system. This may be due to a hit to their confidence in round one. They were shell-shocked against the Giants, and were slow, lethargic and bereft of confidence. This can happen, but if the game plan is not working, or has been shut down by the opposition, the minimal requirement is to make is a scrap.
